The Successor

Ellias, newly installed at the head of a Paris fashion house, is preparing his first collection when he learns that the father he has not seen in years has died, and he goes to Montreal for the funeral. There is a basement in his father's house, and in the basement something the man hid all his life. Ellias is caught between reporting what he finds and concealing it, and the road he chooses puts him in his father's place. Xavier Legrand's film advances by changing genre: first a drama of the art world, then a family story, finally horror. Marc-André Grondin leads and collapses steadily along a line of physical illness. The idea is plain: an inheritance is not only property. Who it is for: viewers who like slow-building psychological thrillers and films that change genre. Who it is not for: anyone who would rather not enter the last section unwarned.
