What The Super Cops Is About

Gordon Parks's 1974 film is built on the true story of the New York police officers David Greenberg and Robert Hantz. The pair made so many arrests in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn that the street named them Batman and Robin; between 1968 and 1972 they logged more than six hundred. The film plays them as two rebels permanently at odds with their superiors and never lets go of its comic tone. Ron Leibman and David Selby star, and the real Greenberg and Hantz served as advisers. What the film does not cover is that the years afterwards were not clean for either man: Hantz had to leave the force and Greenberg served two prison terms for fraud.
