What The Tale of Daye's Family Is About
Karim El Shenawy's 2025 Egyptian film follows Daye, a young man known for his voice. To reach a competition he must cross the country within forty-eight hours. He has no money, no vehicle and no way to make contact. His broken family and his music teacher travel with him; the film shows different parts of the country along the road and brings Daye's experience of exclusion into the narrative. The music does work inside the story. The production is mid-scale. The tone is hopeful with hard moments. Who it's for: those who like Egyptian cinema and road films. Who it's not for: viewers expecting realist pacing; the film runs in a fable-like shape.
