The Gentlemen

Karim El Shenawy's 2025 Egyptian film tells the story of a family coming apart after their father's death. With Galal gone, the settled life of the Abu El Fadl family collapses; the eldest son Tarek becomes responsible for everything, while Hegazy, returning from Cairo, discovers that dealing with his patients is far easier than dealing with his own family. As inheritance, debt and old scores surface, the situation grows more tangled. The tone moves between comedy and family drama, a combination Egyptian cinema has used often in recent years. Mohamed Mamdouh's performance holds the ensemble together. The narrative weakness is that the conflict between the brothers resolves too neatly and too fast; the questions of class and inheritance are left where they were opened. Who it's for: viewers who like mainstream Egyptian cinema and stories of family reckoning. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a deeper treatment, or who will find the switches between comedy and drama uneven.
