What The Tale of Genji Is About
Genji, son of the emperor, is spoken of throughout the court at Kyoto for his beauty and his grace, and cannot stop himself pursuing the one thing he can never have: his father’s young wife. When the consequences of that obsession arrive he drifts from one affair to the next, always looking for something that will not complete. Gisaburo Sugii turned the first third of the eleventh century epic by Murasaki Shikibu into animation. The telling deliberately mixes the real with the dreamed and holds a slow, melancholy register; Haruomi Hosono wrote the music.
