Jack and the Beanstalk

Jack throws the beans onto the ground and in the morning finds a stalk running up into the sky. He climbs it with his dog Crosby. Above the clouds there is a kingdom. Princess Margaret is about to marry the giant and raises no objection at all, because she is under a spell. The giant's mother, the witch Madame Hecuba, runs everything. Jack breaks the spell and saves the kingdom. But the only way to stop the giant is to cut the stalk, and the stalk is the one thing joining the two worlds. Gisaburō Sugii directs the Japanese animation; ninety-eight minutes, produced by Group TAC. It is a musical from beginning to end. It was made as a children's film, and over the years the witch scenes and the ending gave it another kind of reputation; the last scene implies Jack will forget Margaret in time.
