The Teahouse of the August Moon

Okinawa after the war. The American occupation is charged with bringing democracy to the villages. Captain Fisby is sent to the village of Tobiki with a manual and instructions to build a school in the shape of a pentagon. Sakini, the village interpreter, helps him, or rather steers him where he wants him to go. The villagers do not want a school; they want a teahouse. Fisby resists, then gives in, then ends up in a kimono producing sweet potato brandy. By the time headquarters finds out, it is done. Daniel Mann directs, adapting John Patrick's Pulitzer-winning play, with Glenn Ford as Fisby. Two hours and three minutes. Sakini is played by Marlon Brando, made up as an Okinawan man, which is now the most criticised thing about the film.
