What The Telegraphist Is About
Ove Rolandsen lives in the north of Norway. He is the telegraph operator in a small fishing village. The year is 1903 and the village is beginning to change. A factory is taking the place of the old order. Rolandsen is somewhere else entirely. His mind is on getting ahead and on having fun. He works on inventions of his own. Meanwhile his standing in the village gets muddled. He has a fiancee but his heart is elsewhere. He is drawn to the wife of the parson. Gossip travels fast in the village. The account comes from a novel by Knut Hamsun. Bjorn Floberg and Marie Richardson take the leads, with Jarl Kulle and Kjersti Holmen also in the cast, in Erik Gustavson’s Danish and Norwegian coproduction of 1993.
