The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo

In 2008 in Ciudad Juárez a sixteen-year-old named Rubí disappears and her mother Marisela searches for her herself. She finds the killer, the man confesses, and the court acquits him. Marisela then begins sitting alone outside the state government building and keeps it up for months. In 2010 she is shot there, on camera. Carlos Pérez Osorio builds the documentary from the family's accounts, court records and security footage. The three deaths of the title are the daughter's murder, the mother's murder and the way the state failed to record either. The film fed directly into the debate in Mexico about femicide and impunity, and after it went out on Netflix the case returned to public attention. Who it is for: viewers who follow true crime documentary and the search for justice where the law does not work. Who it is not for: anyone who does not want to watch a recording of the killing.
