The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan

Young D'Artagnan arrives in Paris from Gascony, meets three musketeers and lands in the middle of a conspiracy involving the queen's honour and the politics of France. Martin Bourboulon directed, from Alexandre Dumas's novel. It is the first of a two-part production. The cast is large: François Civil as D'Artagnan, Vincent Cassel as Athos, Romain Duris as Aramis, Pio Marmaï as Porthos and Eva Green as Milady. The scale is in the numbers: 2,000 costumes, 930 technicians, 650 horses and 9,000 extras, across 150 days of filming from August 2021 to June 2022. Civil spent six months in intense preparation on fencing, sword-fighting and riding. He also admitted he had misled the producer about how well he knew the novel in order to get the part. The combined budget for both films is 72 million euros, 36 million each, making it the second most expensive French production of 2023. The first part grossed 35 million dollars worldwide and sold over 3.4 million tickets in France alone. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 98 percent from 51 reviews. The Guardian called it a lavishly produced, very enjoyable innocent pleasure. Who it is for: viewers who like costume adventure and adaptations of the classics. Who it is not for: anyone wanting closure. The film leaves the story to the second part and stops in the middle.
