What The Three Musketeers Is About
Arriving in Paris from Gascony, d'Artagnan meets three musketeers and lands in the middle of the intrigue between Cardinal Richelieu and the Queen. George Sidney's version does not take Dumas seriously; it is cut almost like a musical and the duels are choreography rather than fighting. Gene Kelly plays d'Artagnan and uses his dancing background openly, working the swordplay as a number. Lana Turner plays Milady and Vincent Price is Richelieu. The Technicolor is among the most saturated of the period. The adaptation cuts away the darker half of the novel, so the result is enjoyable and light. Who it is for: viewers who like colourful forties studio adventure and Gene Kelly. Who it is not for: anyone wanting fidelity to the book.
