What The Toth Family Is About
In 1942, in a quiet village in northern Hungary, the major who commands their son on the eastern front comes to stay with the fireman Tóth and his family for a rest. The family try to keep the man happy in the hope that their son will have an easier time at the front; as the major’s sleeplessness and obsessions grow, the whole order of the house is rearranged around him. Night after night they fold boxes, they stop the clocks, they suspend their own lives. What began as a small show of courtesy stops, at a certain point, being a comedy. Zoltán Fábri’s ninety five minute Hungarian film was adapted from István Örkény’s novel; Zoltán Latinovits plays the major, and it was completed in 1969.
