What The Tower Is About
Mats Grorud's 2018 animated film is set in the Burj el-Barajneh refugee camp in Beirut. Wardi, eleven years old, was born there and lives with her family in a building that has been raised floor by floor over the years. The person she is closest to is Sidi, her great-grandfather, one of the first to settle in the camp. When Sidi gives her the key to his old house in Galilee, she reads it as a sign that he has lost hope, and she goes looking for that hope around the camp, collecting a testimony from each generation. The present is animated in clay and the past in drawn line. Grorud taught in the camp, and the film is built on real accounts gathered there.
