A blood feud between two mountain families has been running for generations in the Appalachians. An engineer arrives to survey for the railroad, lands in the middle of the quarrel, and falls in love with a young woman raised on the mountain. Her family wants neither the outsider nor the change the railroad is going to bring. It is adapted from John Fox Jr's novel. Its real place in history is elsewhere, though: it was the first feature shot outdoors in three-strip Technicolor. The colour here is not a flourish, it is the mountain. Henry Hathaway directed, with Fred MacMurray, Sylvia Sidney and Henry Fonda. This is often named as the film that actually sold colour to audiences.
