What The Treasure Is About
The film takes place in the house of a bell founder in Slovenia. Living there are the master Svetocar Badalic, his wife, their daughter Beate and the journeyman Svetelenz. Centuries earlier the house was burned and rebuilt on its foundations. What the family believe is this: a treasure from that time is still under the ground. Nobody knows where it was buried. Then a young goldsmith named Arno comes to work in the house. Arno is drawn to Beate and also tries his own way of finding the treasure. The wanting of the gold and the jealousy bring the household to the point of coming apart. This silent film of eighty minutes is G.W. Pabst’s first feature, a German film completed in 1923.
