What The Devious Path Is About
Irene is worn down by the inattention of her husband Thomas, a lawyer; he refuses to go out with her and makes no secret of disliking her friend Liane. Drawn to the painter Walter Frank, Irene agrees to run away with him to Austria, but Thomas puts a stop to it. She then throws herself into the nightlife of Berlin; after a night of dancing, drinking and cocaine at the table she comes to the point of divorce, and just as the separation is made she realises she still loves her husband. In G.W. Pabst’s ninety seven minute German silent film, Brigitte Helm plays Irene and Gustav Diessl plays Thomas; the German title Abwege means going astray. It was completed in 1928.
