What The True Glory Is About
The documentary builds the Western Front, from the Normandy landings to the fall of Berlin, out of footage shot by nearly fourteen hundred cameramen. What is unusual is the telling: instead of one omniscient narrator it uses the voices of ordinary soldiers, journalists and civilians, so the war arrives from the people who fought it rather than the people who ran it. It was made jointly by the American and British information ministries and Eisenhower opens it with an address, so its official status is declared from the start. Carol Reed and Garson Kanin directed, with Paddy Chayefsky and Peter Ustinov among the writers. It won the Academy Award for documentary in 1945.
