What Pressure Is About
Portsmouth, June 1944. The date set for the Normandy landings is 5 June and everything is ready. The only uncertainty is the weather. Captain James Stagg, a Scottish meteorologist, says a storm is coming across the Channel; his American counterpart argues it will be clear. Eisenhower has to choose between two forecasts and has seventy-two hours. The film takes place almost entirely inside a headquarters building. A map, a barometer, a telephone and a clock; the tension comes from nothing else. What interests it is not the war but deciding under uncertainty and who carries the weight of that decision. Anthony Maras directed and co-wrote with David Haig, from Haig's play of the same name. The play ran in London and was performed in 2019 for Queen Elizabeth II and heads of state to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the landings. Andrew Scott plays Stagg and Brendan Fraser plays Eisenhower, with Kerry Condon and Chris Messina in the cast. The real Stagg advised that 5 June would be dangerous, and the landings were pushed to 6 June. It opened in the United States on 29 May 2026. Who it is for: anyone who likes single-location tension and the less-told corners of the Second World War. Who it is not for: anyone expecting action. The landings are barely shown, the film does not hide its stage origin, and the supporting characters stay thin.
