The Two Escobars

Jeff and Michael Zimbalist's 2010 documentary describes the link between football and drug money in Colombia. While Pablo Escobar ran the Medellín cartel he poured money into clubs; pitches were built, players bought, and the national team acquired the strongest squad in its history. Andrés Escobar played in that team's defence and was no relation. The own goal he scored at the 1994 World Cup led to Colombia's elimination, and days after returning home he was shot in a car park. The documentary runs the two men's stories in parallel and dispels the illusion that football could stay clean. Interviews with cartel members, journalists and the players' families are placed in balance. It was made for ESPN's documentary series. Who it's for: viewers curious about sports documentary and recent Latin American history. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach the details of murder and drug violence.
