The Two Horses of Genghis Khan

An old instrument is at the centre of the film. It is called the morin khuur. It is played like a fiddle with a horse’s head carved on it. This one was left behind by Urna’s grandmother. Verses from an old song are engraved on its neck. The song is The Two Horses of Genghis Khan. The verses are incomplete. The instrument is broken as well, damaged during the Cultural Revolution in Inner Mongolia. Urna is a well known Mongolian singer. She sets out to find the missing verses. She goes first to Ulan Bator and then out onto the steppe. She meets a great many people along the way, in a landscape and among lives that are both changing, and the film moves between documentary and fiction. Byambasuren Davaa made the ninety minute film, a German and Mongolian production finished in 2009.
