What The Upturned Glass Is About
A brain surgeon, lecturing to medical students, begins to describe a case. The story is his own: an affair with a married woman, the end of it, and the woman falling from a window to her death. He is convinced it was not an accident, and when he finds the person responsible he decides to settle it himself rather than go to the police. Lawrence Huntington's 1947 film is one of the coldest pieces of British noir. The narrator's confidence in his own mind cracks by degrees, and past a certain point the audience cannot tell how much of what it is being told to trust. James Mason takes the lead, and his wife Pamela Kellino shares the writing credit.
