What Wanted for Murder Is About

Women are being strangled in London. The killer is the son of a famous hangman, a perfectly presentable man who cannot master the urge inside him and is crushed by what he believes he inherited from his father. The police are closing in while he tries to believe that meeting a woman might give him an ordinary life. Lawrence Huntington's 1946 film is an early piece of British noir. It shows you the killer at the start and hangs the tension not on his capture but on the war going on inside him. Eric Portman plays it cold and pitiable at once. The fairground and London park sequences are what people remember of it.
