What The Velvet Underground and Nico: A Symphony of Sound Is About
The film records a rehearsal by The Velvet Underground, with Nico among them. What comes out of it is one long, loose improvisation from beginning to end. There is no song structure; the sound widens and stretches on its own. The camera does not try to put the rehearsal in order and leaves it as it is. That choice separates the film from a concert recording and from a documentary alike. That it was shot in 1966 makes the recording a document of the band’s early period. John Cale, Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker are playing. The seventy minutes carry a single session. The American film by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey was completed in 1966.
