What The Venerable W. Is About
In Myanmar, a Buddhist monk named Ashin Wirathu is the leading figure of an anti-Muslim movement. In his sermons and his publications he presents Muslims as a threat to the survival of the country and of Buddhism. The documentary lets him speak directly, carrying what he says without cutting it and without adding commentary. It also shows the violence in Rakhine, Rohingya whose houses were burned, and those who had to flee the country. Barbet Schroeder's film is, in his own words, the third part of a trilogy of evil, after his documentaries on Idi Amin and Jacques Vergès. It screened at Cannes. Schroeder builds the film on how disturbing it is to hear this violence coming out of a monk's mouth.
