Koko S Saul Kitchener C Carl Pribram R Roger Fouts What Koko: A Talking Gorilla Is About
Barbet Schroeder filmed the work between the psychologist Penny Patterson and Koko, a female gorilla taken from the San Francisco Zoo to Stanford. Patterson is teaching her American Sign Language and says the animal genuinely talks back. The film neither applauds the claim nor demolishes it; it keeps the scientists, the zoo officials and the gorilla inside the same frame and leaves the watching to us. Nestor Almendros shot it. Who is training whom, and what is owed to a creature like this, are still open questions when it ends.
