The Wandering Princess

Ryuko comes from an aristocratic Japanese family. Her marriage is arranged for her. The man is Pu Zhe. He is the younger brother of the emperor of Manchukuo. Manchukuo was a state Japan had set up. The marriage therefore carried a political meaning. Something happens that surprises everyone. A real love grows between the two. The early years pass inside a world of protocol. Then the war changes everything. Japan loses, and in 1945 the Soviet army enters Manchuria. Ryuko is evacuated from there under harsh conditions, in a story drawn from Saga Hiro’s memoir with a screenplay by Natto Wada. Machiko Kyō and Eiji Funakoshi appear in the hundred and two minute film, a Japanese production Kinuyo Tanaka finished in 1960.
