What The Weight of Gold Is About
The documentary gives, in their own words, the mental difficulties Olympic athletes go through during competition and after it. Michael Phelps, Apolo Ohno, Shaun White, Lolo Jones and Gracie Gold talk about the emptiness that follows the medal, the expectation resting on them and the impossibility of asking for help. What the film says is plain: for these people a support system either does not exist or cannot be reached. The account does not diminish Olympic achievement, it tries to make the cost of that achievement something that can be talked about. Most of the people speaking are saying it this plainly for the first time, and some of them no longer compete at all. Brett Rapkin’s sixty minute American documentary was completed in 2020.
