What The White Space Is About
Francesca Comencini's 2009 Italian film is adapted from a book by Valeria Parrella. Maria, forty, teaches adult education in Naples when an unexpected pregnancy ends in a very early birth. Most of the film is the uncertain stretch while Irene stays in the incubator: the waiting, the corridor, looking through glass. That is the white space of the title, neither death nor life but a time frozen between them. Comencini refuses to turn it into melodrama and refuses to make Maria an exemplary mother; she watches a woman who has lost control of her life for the first time. Margherita Buy took the Pasinetti prize for best actress in Venice.
