What The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm Is About
Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm make their living writing dry scholarly books. Wilhelm is bored by it and starts going village to village collecting the tales people tell aloud, which his older brother considers a waste of working hours. Half the film follows the brothers' lives and the other half stages three of the stories they gathered: the dancing princess, the cobbler and the elves, and the singing bone. Henry Levin directed the biographical sections and George Pal the fairy tales. It is one of only two narrative features ever shot in three-camera Cinerama, built for a huge curved screen, which is why it never lands the same way on a television. It won an Academy Award, took three further nominations, and was among the biggest earners of 1962.
