San Francisco, 1850. Jonathan Clark is a sea captain hunting seals in Alaskan waters without Russian permission. He has a large idea in his head: to buy Alaska from the Russians. In the city he meets the Russian countess Marina, who is running from a marriage she does not want. Something starts between them. But the Russian governor is after Marina, and Clark has a rival captain, Portugee, in front of him. The two ships set off on a race that runs all the way to Alaska. Raoul Walsh directs, with Gregory Peck as Clark, Anthony Quinn as Portugee and Ann Blyth as Marina. A hundred and four minutes. It is adapted from Rex Beach's novel. The race sequences, shot at sea, are the strongest thing in it.
