Nikolay Urumov What The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner Is About
Alex is a Bulgarian who grew up in Germany. A car crash takes his parents and his memory at once; he cannot even recall his own name. His grandfather Bay Dan comes from Bulgaria and sets about doing by his own method what the doctors could not: he takes his grandson and they set out, crossing half of Europe towards the place they came from. Along the way they play backgammon, which for the old man is both a game and a way of telling things. Behind all this lies the family's flight from Bulgaria under communism. Stephan Komandarev directed it from Ilija Trojanow's autobiographical novel. Predrag Manojlović plays the grandfather. Bulgaria submitted the film for the Academy Awards.
