What They Call Us Monsters Is About
In the high-security wing of a juvenile hall in Sylmar, Los Angeles, three teenagers wait to be tried for serious crimes: Juan, Jarad and Antonio. They join a screenwriting workshop, and the camera watches them there, building stories of their own. Some of them are facing sentences of more than a hundred years. The title carries the real question: to their advocates they are children, to the system adults, to their victims monsters. The documentary accepts none of those labels easily, and it does not write the victims out either. In the same period California passed SB 260, which opened a route to parole for crimes committed under the age of eighteen, and that runs in the background of the film. Ben Lear directed.
