What Third Person Singular Number Is About
Ruba is left alone in Dhaka when Munna, the man she has been living with, goes to prison. Society does not forgive her for having lived with a man without being married; she cannot find a place to live or work, and walking down the street she meets looks and words that pass judgement on her. She gets some breathing room with Topu, a musician and an old friend, but the place assigned to her there is clear as well. The film is not about the consequence of the woman’s choice but about who is made to pay for it. In Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s hundred and twenty four minute Bangladeshi film, Nusrat Imrose Tisha plays Ruba, Mosharraf Karim plays Munna and Rashed Uddin Ahmed Topu plays Topu. It opened in Dhaka on 10 December 2009 and is the film Bangladesh submitted for the foreign language film Oscar.
