What Thomas the Impostor Is About
In the First World War, with Paris expected to fall, the widowed Princesse de Bormes puts together a convoy of cars to bring the wounded back from the front and nurse them at her own house. The authorities refuse permission, until sixteen year old Guillaume Thomas joins the convoy and everyone takes him for the nephew of the famous General de Fontenoy. The boy does not correct the mistake and takes to being treated with respect; the princess adopts him and her daughter Henriette falls in love with him. But Thomas wants to see the war close up and follows the identity he invented to the front. Georges Franju’s ninety four minute French film was adapted from Jean Cocteau’s novel; Emmanuelle Riva appears.
