What Thousand Pieces of Gold Is About
In China in the eighteen eighties, a poor father sells his daughter Lalu into marriage. But Lalu never becomes a bride; she is taken to a gold mining town in Idaho as the property of a saloon keeper. He renames her China Polly and plans to sell her to the townsmen as entertainment. Lalu refuses this and sets about making a way of her own. The film does not show her as someone waiting to be saved; it shows her deciding for herself. The order that treats her as goods that were bought is the real subject. Staying on her feet in a foreign country, among people whose language she does not know, carries the story. Rosalind Chao and Chris Cooper appear in Nancy Kelly’s hundred and five minute American film, completed in 1991.
