Through and Through

Jan and Maria become a couple in the Kraków of the thirties. Jan tries to find work as an architect and does not manage it. The two of them struggle with poverty and with severe humiliation. Their effort to stay alive drags them into a desperate crime. The story is taken from something that really happened in the thirties. After their arrest they are tried under the hatred of the town, and each of them wants to take the whole blame. The film keeps most of the events off the screen and leaves the viewer to construct them. That formal choice made the film contested when it appeared. Franciszek Trzeciak and Anna Nieborowska appear in Grzegorz Królikiewicz’s seventy minute Polish film, completed in 1973.
