To Have (Or Not)

Alice is laid off from a factory assembly line. She leaves her boyfriend and the provincial town where she lives and goes to Lyon with neither a job nor a plan. There she meets Bruno, who works on a building site, has just been left and is in a deep depression. A closeness forms between them, but the film does not offer it as deliverance. The account carries unemployment and the inability to decide with equal weight. The camera follows Alice and leaves the job interviews, the bus journeys and the empty hours exactly as they are. Sandrine Kiberlain plays the lead in Laetitia Masson’s eighty nine minute French film, completed in 1995.
