What To the Ends of the Earth Is About
Michael Barrows, a narcotics agent working for the United States Treasury, becomes obsessed with exposing an international drug ring. The trail drags him from San Francisco to China, Egypt, Lebanon and Cuba, and the film opens with a smuggling ship throwing people overboard to destroy the evidence, which is exactly where the agent’s resolve comes from. Robert Stevenson’s hundred and nine minute Columbia production draws its story from Treasury Department files and is built in the semi documentary manner of the period, leaning heavily on location work. Harry Anslinger, who ran the Bureau of Narcotics, appears as himself three times in the picture. Dick Powell, Signe Hasso and Ludwig Donath star, and the film opened on 27 February 1948.
