What Tombstone of the Fireflies Is About
Right after the bombing of Kobe in 1945, Seita and his small sister Setsuko, who have lost their mother, gather what is left to them and go to their aunt. They do not find there what they hoped for; the woman treats them as a burden, and in the end the two children leave the house and try to live on their own. In the last months of the war finding food becomes harder and harder, and the decisions Seita takes, caught between being a brother and being a guardian, are both protective and not enough. Taro Hyugaji’s hundred minute Japanese film was adapted from Akiyuki Nosaka’s story, which draws on what he himself lived through, and is a live action version of it. It opened on 5 July 2008.
