What Tomka and His Friends Is About
Tomka is a boy who likes playing football with his friends, and the town stadium is the centre of the world for them. When the German army takes the town the soldiers set up their camp in that very stadium and the children lose their pitch. Tomka begins organising small acts of sabotage against the soldiers with his friends and then with the help of their parents; what they do starts out like a game but its consequences are real. Xhanfise Keko’s seventy five minute Albanian film tells the war through the eyes of children and shows the resistance without turning it into a speech about heroism. It was adapted from a novel and completed in 1977; Sotiraq Çili plays Tomka.
