What Top Knot Detective Is About
The film pretends to tell the story of a Japanese samurai detective series that aired in Australia in the early 1990s and found a cult audience. Known in Japan by a title that means roughly Deductive Reasoning Ronin, it was called Top Knot Detective in the west, and behind it stood Takashi Tawagoto, who wrote, produced, directed and starred in it and who, by this account, could do none of those things. The ninety minute Australian production by Dominic Pearce and Aaron McCann is a mockumentary; interviews, clips from the series and gossip are assembled as if they were a real production history. Toshi Okuzaki, Masa Yamaguchi and Mayu Iwasaki appear, and the film was completed in 2017.
