What Tough Kids Is About
Pavel Antonov, trained in physical education rather than teaching, believes he can find the right approach to children everyone else has given up on, and sets up a summer camp for teenagers already in trouble with the law. The work does not pay off quickly and often does not pay off at all, which is where the film's honesty lies. For her 1983 picture Dinara Asanova cast genuinely difficult youngsters, and the non professionals give it a documentary hardness. Valeriy Priyomykhov plays the instructor. It won the USSR State Prize in 1985 and is counted among the most direct Soviet films about young people.
