What Toys in the Attic Is About
In an attic, among the discarded things, a set of toys lives: Buttercup, a rag doll, the puppet Prince, a lazy Bear, and Schubert, made out of modelling clay. When there are no people about they all come alive and set up an order of their own. One day Buttercup is snatched and taken off to the Land of Evil. Her friends go to get her back. Jiří Barta's Czech animation was made with puppets and stop motion. At the head of the Land of Evil is a military bust, commanding an army of insects and an eye that sees everywhere. The choice is a plain comparison: the film is a children's tale and an allegory of the Soviet period at once. Barta is among those who raised stop motion to the level of an art.
