What Train Driver's Diary Is About
Over a career a train driver is involved in the deaths of fifteen to twenty people; the brakes do not hold, the distance is never enough, and nobody on either side can do much about it. Miloš Radović builds his film directly on that statistic: the lives of men who never wanted to kill anyone and have to carry the number anyway. Ilija, an old driver, knows his own figure. He stops a boy heading for the tracks at the last moment and adopts him, and years later Sima insists on the same job. Ilija objects at first, then gives in. The strange part starts after that: the young man never has his first one, and the waiting sinks him into a permanent dread. The film runs on gallows humour and then catches in your throat exactly where you were going to laugh. Lazar Ristovski plays Ilija.
