Lola Bessis What Train of Shadows Is About
Commissioned to mark a century of the Lumière cinematograph, José Luis Guerín instead invents a disappearance. Gérard Fleury, a Paris lawyer and amateur filmmaker, left the house at dawn on 8 November 1930 to find the right light for a landscape study by the lake at Le Thuit in Normandy, and died there in circumstances never fully explained. Three months earlier he had shot a sunlit home movie in the gardens of the family house, children on bicycles, dogs, small conjuring tricks. Guerín presents that staged footage as a document, then returns to the same village with actors in period costume and restages the scenes, repeating and reframing them until the line between record and fiction dissolves. The title comes from Maxim Gorky’s 1896 essay on his first Lumière screening.
