What Work in Progress Is About

Jose Luis Guerin kept a camera in one Barcelona neighbourhood, the Barrio Chino, for a year and a half while a new apartment block went up, and cut a hundred and ten hours down to a little over two. The film is far less interested in how a building is raised than in what the neighbourhood is: a young couple squatting nearby, an undocumented man looking for work for himself and his son, a local girl who falls for one of the labourers. Old graves come out of the ground during the dig and the whole street gathers to look. It won a Goya in 2001.
