Tread

Tread, directed by Paul Solet, is a documentary blending real footage with reenactment scenes about the June 4, 2004 event in Granby, Colorado, known in the media as "Killdozer." Marvin Heemeyer, a muffler shop owner, secretly armored a bulldozer with steel and concrete over 18 months after a land dispute with the town council, then used it to cause roughly 7 million dollars in property damage; no one but Heemeyer himself died. The film juxtaposes Heemeyer's own audio recordings with the town residents' account, presenting conflicting perspectives rather than a one sided narrative. The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 8, 2019, and streams on Netflix. The film holds a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Who it's for: anyone curious about a true story documentary where a land dispute led its owner to secretly armor a bulldozer over 18 months and level a town, presenting conflicting perspectives side by side. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a one sided, heroizing narrative, since the film gives voice to both the perpetrator and the victims and leaves judgment to the viewer.
