What Trees of Peace Is About
Trees of Peace was director Alanna Brown's debut, inspired by real testimony from the 1994 Rwandan genocide but built around four fictional composite characters, two Tutsi women, one Hutu woman, and an American volunteer. It's a genuine indie success story: funded with over 65,000 dollars from more than 350 Kickstarter backers, shot in under a month almost entirely on a Los Angeles soundstage, then won the top three jury prizes at the American Black Film Festival, including the John Singleton Award for Best First Feature, plus the top jury award at Santa Barbara, which led Netflix to acquire it. Who it's for: anyone curious about a low budget, independently made genocide drama grounded in real testimony, and its journey from Kickstarter to Netflix. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a big budget, sweeping historical epic, since the film stays confined to a limited setting and a handful of characters.
