Ruth & Boaz

Ruth makes music in Atlanta. She is close to a record deal, but her boyfriend's circle is involved and that circle is not good for her. He dies. Ruth leaves the city and goes with his mother to a small town in Tennessee. Naomi is carrying her grief and Ruth looks after her. She looks for work. She starts at a vineyard. Boaz, who owns it, is quiet and distant; people in the town talk about him. Ruth has not given up music but what she writes now is something else. Alanna Brown directs; Michael Elliott and Cory Tynan wrote the screenplay. Serayah plays Ruth, Tyler Lepley plays Boaz and Phylicia Rashād plays Naomi. It is an American production. The film went out on Netflix on 26 September 2025; Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin are among the producers. The narrative is the Book of Ruth carried into the present; the plot follows that text. Music carries much of it; a song was written for the film and Serayah performs it. The matter it treats is starting again; the film builds it as a narrative of faith. The narrative puts the relation between the two women at its centre and keeps the romance secondary. The town is deliberately idealised and the conflict kept small. The film belongs to the faith based category and its audience is defined. Its limit is predictability; the narrative is conventional, the conflict weak, and the ending too tidy. Who it is for: viewers who like faith based drama and romance with music. Who it is not for: it is conventional, didactic, and the ending easy.
