What Trudell Is About
The documentary follows the life of the poet and activist John Trudell. Trudell was one of the leading figures of the American Indian Movement and took part in the occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969. In 1979 his wife and children died in a fire at their home; the fire was suspected of being arson and was never cleared up. After that he began saying what he had to say through poetry and music. The film brings together his speeches, his stage performances and his political position. The account does not present him only as a victim either; it leaves him as a man who refused to stop speaking. Heather Rae’s eighty minute American documentary was completed in 2005.
